When our client approached IEI, they were looking to expand their service offerings to include an advanced network firewall solution for their clients. The traditional route of a dedicated firewall hardware appliance is too bulky and costly, so they were looking to upgrade their current systems with a robust, long-term solution.

The problems that our customers faced
|
Difficult upgrades :
Dedicated network appliances built on proprietary hardware are typically designed for a singular purpose. This integrated design approach provides a reliable closed system. Network service vendors like our client have to provide service agreements for the hardware they provide and hire highly-qualified personnel to upgrade and maintain the hardware onsite. Sending personnel to a site is slow and expensive, and focuses an inordinate amount of time on hardware upkeep and incurs high costs when upgrades are needed, costs that they must pass on to their customers.
Underutilized resources :
Underutilization of hardware is an increasing issue with expanding networks. Dedicating a powerful piece of hardware to a single task is certainly a good way to ensure that service is of the highest quality. Still, if that hardware is operating at 10% of capacity, a lot is going to waste. Ideally, our client could flexibly reduce or increase computing resources as and when needed.
Closed software stack :
The network appliance "black box" gives a powerful competitive advantage, creating a barrier to entry for rival companies. However, this closed system incurs considerable costs at the vendor side. By developing everything inhouse, they incur high development costs and hinder their ability to expand. Our client wanted to simplify the development process.
