Moviegoers want more. Bigger, better, more immersive. But many people are opting to stay away from theaters, as their home entertainment systems already have large screens and incredible sound, and you don't even need to leave the comfort of your own home. To this end, 2014 saw the lowest US theater ticket sales in over 20 years.
Now, 4D theaters are drawing people back. Originally just for amusement rides, these new 4D theaters add sensory inputs like moving chairs, scents, sprays, and wind to mainstream blockbuster movies - bringing them to life.
Theater owners are thrilled, too. Occupancy rates of 4D theaters are 2 to 3 times that of traditional movies, and people are willing to pay over $20 per ticket for the privilege. On the other hand, with setup costs as high as USD 1.5M, there's a big upfront commitment that needs to be recouped - and protected.
